Every year on 5 October, World Teachers’ Day celebrates teachers and the contribution they make to education and young people’s lives.

At Activ4 School Tours, we’re fortunate to work with teachers across the UK who go above and beyond to create opportunities for their pupils both inside and outside the classroom.

School trips can give young people the chance to experience new cultures, develop independence, build confidence and bring classroom learning to life. But behind every successful school trip is a teacher who has put in the time and effort to make it happen.

This World Teachers’ Day, we want to celebrate them.

Why are teachers so important to school trips?

Teachers are central to successful school trips because they identify opportunities for their pupils, gain school approval, communicate with parents and oversee their pupils throughout the experience.

Long before pupils get on the coach or board a flight, their teachers may have spent months preparing for the trip.

This can include choosing a suitable destination, gaining approval from senior leadership, promoting the opportunity to pupils and parents, checking passports and travel documentation, considering dietary and accessibility requirements, completing risk assessments, organising rooming lists and preparing pupils for travel.

And that’s before the trip itself begins!

Taking pupils away from home comes with considerable responsibility, which is why we never underestimate the commitment teachers make when organising a school tour.

What are the benefits of school trips for pupils?

School trips can support pupils’ academic learning, personal development, independence, confidence, teamwork and understanding of different cultures and environments.

The benefits vary depending on the type of trip, but learning outside the classroom can give pupils opportunities that are difficult to recreate within school.

An educational school trip can allow pupils to experience the subjects they study in real-world settings, from visiting historical sites to experiencing another language and culture first-hand.

A school sports tour can develop teamwork and give pupils the opportunity to compete against new opposition and experience different sporting cultures.

A school ski trip can encourage pupils to challenge themselves, learn a new skill and develop confidence in an unfamiliar environment.

Performing arts, adventure and watersports trips can similarly give young people opportunities to step outside their comfort zones and experience something completely different from their everyday school environment.

For some young people, a school trip may even be their first experience of travelling abroad.

Why are experiences outside the classroom important?

Experiences outside the classroom can help pupils apply their learning in real-world environments while developing personal and social skills that extend beyond individual subjects.

Travel can encourage young people to become more independent, adapt to unfamiliar situations, work alongside their peers and interact with different places and cultures.

Perhaps most importantly, these experiences can stay with pupils.

Years later, they may not remember every lesson from a particular school year, but they may still remember the first time they skied down a mountain, performed overseas, competed against an international sports team or visited somewhere they had previously only seen in a textbook.

These are the experiences that teachers work so hard to make possible.

What does a school tour operator do for teachers?

A specialist school tour operator helps teachers plan and organise educational travel by coordinating the practical elements of a trip and providing support before and during travel.

At Activ4, our aim is to make organising a school trip as straightforward as possible for teachers.

With more than 25 years of experience organising tailor-made school tours, we can support schools from the initial idea and itinerary through to travel arrangements, accommodation, activities and pre-departure planning.

We also understand how important school trip safety and risk management are when taking pupils away from home. Our experience of working specifically with schools means we can support teachers throughout the planning process and while their group is travelling.

Ultimately, we want teachers to spend less time worrying about the logistics and more time looking forward to the experience with their pupils.

What types of school trips can teachers organise?

Schools can organise trips based around curriculum learning, sport, skiing, performing arts, adventure activities, watersports and many other educational objectives.

There isn’t one type of school trip that suits every school or group.

At Activ4, our programmes include educational school trips, sports tours and ski trips, alongside performing arts, adventure and watersports experiences.

The best school trip should be built around the school’s learning objectives, group requirements, budget and the experiences teachers want their pupils to gain.

That’s why we specialise in tailor-made school tours rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Thank you to the teachers who make it happen

World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity to recognise everything teachers do — including the work that often happens behind the scenes.

So, to all the teachers who give their time to organise school trips:

Thank you for the planning.

Thank you for the paperwork.

Thank you for answering all those questions.

Thank you for the early starts and long travel days.

And, most importantly, thank you for giving young people opportunities and experiences they may remember for the rest of their lives.

Happy World Teachers’ Day from everyone at Activ4 School Tours.
